UNEDITED COURSE EVAL STATEMENTS FROM MY MOST RECENT STUDENTS

(ENGLISH 2 - FRESHMAN SUMMER PROGRAM)

Please identify what you perceive to be the real strengths and weaknesses of this instructor and course.

  • Best (and only so far) English course hands-down! Everything in the class had a purpose and application to other class materials that made the class always engaging and applicable to everything discussed or worked on for the class! I also have felt that the class as improved my college writing in preparation to English Comp 3.

  • Great Instructor!

  • I feel grateful to have had Professor Poston as one of my first professors here at UCLA. The course did an amazing job at organizing office hours for productive one-on-one hours in terms of communication. Poston cares about student success and improvement, and exhibited a "tough love" attitude that showed she meant the best for us, even if it meant a hard hit to a grade/assignment (which indirectly taught me to fully read and understand the syllabus - ha). The main text of the course, "Deep Survival," was a good read and kept in line with the course and Poston's intention of (college) survival. It's funny to admit... but I am happy I did not score higher on my entrance exams because Poston taught me true college standards of writing when I thought my writing was already satisfactory. The course was challenging because of the essays due each week, but each one had a fair impact on one's grade and opportunities to improve. It was hard to break a lot of high school habits (Grade Breakers) and try to write a stellar paper at the same time but each assignment was a stepping stone. I like how the course was customized for the Science-Intensive cohort, because I learned to write in APA style (which I had never done before) and how to better argue a point through a thesis (as I am still learning but it pushed me out of my comfort zone for the better)…I like the group projects because it was an excuse for me to interact and bond with other students outside of the classroom (I am an introvert so it was cool to experience shared stress/homework/FSP in general). Even though I did not apply it thoroughly in FSP, I learned how to advocate for myself and improve on my professional skills, such as making/updating appointments, addressing a professor properly, writing formal emails and such for the upcoming quarter. This was also the smaller of my two other classes, so having connections close with students/teacher made this one of my classes to look forward to.

  • Instructor Poston installed a sense of realism in her teaching. She is an amazing and if I had the option to take a quarter course with Ms.Poston as the instructor, I would take it in a heartbeat.

  • Instructor Poston was truly an amazing professor. She guided her students into the right direction, she gave detailed lectures, valuable information and feedback. Class was engaging and offered better insight on the English courses offered on campus.

  • Ms. Poston was an amazing instructor.

  • Strengths: She takes the time to explain any subject we struggled on. Weakness: none

  • The instructor is very generous in providing feedback on our homework and essays. She can work on being a bit less intimidating.

  • The instructor was able to provide us insight on our written assignments during one-on-one office hours as well as providing interesting readings relating to how the real world should be approached. The instructor did not have any weaknesses I had issues with, however the planned course felt fast paced because it constantly conflicted with the core class.

  • This course is an excellent course to prepare Freshmen entering UCLA.
