Graduate Writing Workshops

The thing that makes you exceptional, if you are at all, is inevitably that which also makes you lonely.

Sometimes your willpower requires an infusion of whypower, howpower and nowpower.

Doctoral candidates across the nation have shed some tears, (RE)adjusted to the full reality of what they’re undertaking and returned to the business of writing after experiencing one of our workshops or seminars.

It’s not that the words won’t come. They do indeed arrive, but not when you are at your computer. Speaking of sitting down to write, edit and revise—you are still determined to finish but you’re just…done. What motivated you up until this point has either been fully exhausted or what remains is not enough to move you forward. The drive to be the first in your family and/or community to reach this stage or earn this degree has somewhat morphed into an anxious pressure that can flatten you as easily as it propels you. Bottom Line: You are STUCK and part of your massive frustration lies in being sure that you will complete your research, file your dissertation and move forward while being utterly unable to produce the verbiage needed to get you there. Family and friends love you, but they can not help in ways that will advance you toward your goal, which somehow looms large and yet feels out of reach at the moment.

If you’re a graduate student, did you just read what feels like a personal description?

If you instruct and/or counsel graduate students, do the words above apply to them?
