Home to colossal wealth and long portrayed as a bastion of opportunity, it also has one of the largest prison populations in the United States and consistently ranks on the bottom of education indexes. Taking a unique, multifaceted insider’s perspective, First Strike delves into the root causes of its ever-expansive prison system and disastrous educational policy. Recentering analysis of Black masculinity beyond public rhetoric, First Strike critiques the trope of the “school-to-prison pipeline” and instead explores the realm of public school as a form of“enclosure” that has influenced the schooling (and denial of schooling) and imprisonment of Black people in California. Through a fascinating ethnography of a public school in Los Angeles County, and a “day in the life tour” of the effect of prisons on the education of Black youth, Damien M. Sojoyner looks at the contestation over education in the Black community from Reconstruction to the civil rights and Black liberation movements of the past three decades. Policy makers, school districts, and local governments have long known that there is a relationship between high incarceration rates and school failure. First Strike is the first book that demonstrates why that connection exists and shows how school districts, cities and states have been complicit and can reverse a disturbing and needless trend. Her feedback and constructive criticism is excellent, and they really helps in improving writing. The course did go at a fast pace, but that is to be expected. The writing exercises were just right and were very helpful. Instructor Poston is amazing at what she does. Her practices push students to be the best writers they can be. The instructor is helpful and I felt that I learned something in this course. However, the instructor can be quick to judge ….The course is interesting and the workload can be overwhelming at times like the quizzes. The instructor was able to create a safe environment for us. She was very helpful and really made me feel supported while taking her class. I would defiantly take a class with Ms. Poston again. The instructor was strict but that helped me in my writing. The course was stressful but the professor did help me so it would not be as difficult. Also she did care if I had too many assignments due in one day then she would give me an extension. A weakness would be most of the course was focused on one book that it did not diversify until the last two weeks. [MY NOTE: This singular focus for four weeks is intentional, as English 2 students must first focus on writing improvement and then the easier task of sharing their opinions on literature, but this is an honest assessment.] The strengths about this instructor is that she created to lessons to benefit the students in the long run. Her lesson plans are interesting and well thought out.” “Strength of course: was more of a writing course to enhance writing skills, focused on one book and one theme of survival. Reading quizzes challenged me to work better under pressure [and] writing assignments allowed me to connect concepts from reading to outside topics. Weakness of course: None.” “Strengths: She definitely challenged me to push my limits in my writing. This course was very difficult for me, but I feel that I improved as a writer. Ms. Poston was very concerned in study learning. I was able to utilize my office hours and asked for guidance during the many essays that I had to write. She was super organized. She always prepared powerpoint presentations that highlighted the schedule of class each day, and would let the class ahead of time if there were any changes in the previous plan. She gave assignments, graded them at a constant pace, and handed them back to us. She had great communication skills, she would explain concepts from the reading very succinctly. I valued her class despite the amount of struggle I had during reading quizzes and essays. She throughly read my writing and gave me critical feedback that I took positively. I definitely loved that one time in class when we critiqued each others' theses. Weaknesses: In the way she taught the class, there was never guidance on what the ‘perfect’ A essay was.” (Side Note: I am quite comfortable with this “weakness”, as it is a high school way of thinking. I also learned how to properly cite and source information when doing research related topics. ● The College vs high school standard of essay writing. ● I learned many new things that inspired me to talk and ask questions of my friends outside of VIPS. We discussed many things that are important to me and my black identity and I would recommend the course to anyone. ● While also learning better writing skills, I learned more about myself and how I see/define myself. ● The writing class taught me beyond what I expected. It made me a better writer. I got honest feedback! My high school always told me that I was a great writer, but never gave me feedback. The feedback made me grow my writing skills. ● This class taught me beyond writing. I had an interesting discussion about social equality, aesthetic and aspiration, blackness, myth, and so much more. I [had] personally never gotten any space to discuss very important topics [before], but I learned a lot from our discussion. ● I learned the value of perspective. In a confusing debate about race and values I learned that to effectively be able to give insight on the situation you have to take a step back from it and look at it as an outsider. Without this skill you will take the debate personally and then form resentment and hatred for the people involved. ● I learned more about critical thinking and how to accept feedback from instructors. ● I learned how important it is to follow directions closely, always read over work out loud and be specific in writing ● I learned how to properly cite and how to be more formal in my writing ● The writing class gave me new tools and strategies that I had never used before in school. I took different approaches and my writing skills grew stronger like expected they would when I signed up for the program. We learned about various other topics opposed from writing and guest speakers assisted on adding more information to those topics. ● I learned how to become a better writer, how to really organize my thoughts and back that up with evidence. ● I learned how to properly write a research paper, and how to do a works cited page. ● I learned that doing just the bare minimum is not enough and I need to check over my work multiple times. Also to follow all instructions and use all of the resources provided. ● I learned how to listen to directions and that is important for college. When you don’t follow directions even in the slightest a professor can not grade you or deduct points. In high school teachers let some things slide and it is important to want and do what is needed to get 100%. ● I have overall learned new vocabulary including anti blackness, binary, and spirit murdering etc. Not only did my vocabulary grow but my mindset on being black in America and what I can do better to play my art in the community. ● I learned how to write a college level research paper and what it takes to survive in college ● In-text citation also I learned how to pinpoint ideas and properly relate them to my paper. ● That I write how I talk and I need to be more professional and formulate my sentences better. ● The things I learned that improved my writing I find extremely valuable. I also learned a lot more about myself and how I want to represent myself. There were also many valuable lessons about blackness and social justice. ● In my writing class I learned to never be ashamed of myself and to be confident wherever I go. I also learned that my input is important and that I should always speak out. ● Don’t procrastinate. ● I learned how to write a strong 5 page essay. I feel much more confident in my writing skills than before. ● new written skills ● College level writing ● Read over your work, then read it again, and again.
